Match Report
The British and Irish Lions travel to Durban for the first test with their 100% record still intact. However it was not easy as they fought hard to gain their 6th win in a row. They beat the Southern Kings 20-8 in Port Elizabeth but it was by no means easy.
A try in the second-half from Monye, a penalty try along with 10 points coming courtesy of Ronan O’Gara's boot, proved enough to secure victory. On the down side Hook and Murray were forced to leave the field with injuries.
Hook was taken off after 13 minutes following a heavy knock, while Murray limped off after just 7 with a right ankle strain. With both players looking to make their mark with Test selection imminent, but with so little time on the field it remains to be seen how much of an impression they will have made.
Monye’s try came after a superb cross-field kick from O’Gara. Referee Nigel Owens consulted the television referee and after some deliberation he duly awarded the try with 49 minutes on the clock.
This was the Harlequins wingers fourth try of the tour, it came after he won the race and out-muscled opposite man Matt Turner to the loose ball.
O’Gara’s awesome touchline conversion secured the extras and kept his impressive tour kicking record intact. This moved the Lions two scores clear at 13-3.
The Lions second try was down to their dominance in the scrum. They were awarded a penalty try in the 68th-minute after the Southern Kings kept collapsing. The Lions scrumming has been hugely impressive throughout the tour and, despite the early loss of prop Murray, today was no exception.
O’Gara’s easily converted from underneath the posts and put the Lions 17 points ahead, the Kings did hit back with a try from South Africa's Sevens star Mpho Mbiyozo, but it was too little too late and the Lions secured victory in a toughly contested game.
The British and Irish Lions can now turn their attentions to the First Test against the World Champions in Durban on Saturday. With their 100% record still intact they are carrying momentum and will be full of confidence. They will be looking forward to maintaining their unbeaten record as finally approach the business end of the tour.
